Vote For Tim Hale SC for ATC Director

HaleT2.jpg

My position on Rosehill is clear as stated in an article published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 14 November 2024: I have voted against Stage 1A and Stage 2 to progress the proposal to sell Rosehill. The proposal is not feasible

That is why I have the support of the most vocal opposition to the sale of Rosehill in Gai Waterhouse and Chris Waller, among other industry leaders.

"The ATC is a club for members and I am 100% for the members. I would be honoured to be re-elected by the members to the ATC Board of Directors."

My name is Tim Hale, I am Vice-Chair of the ATC, Chair of the Members’ Sub-Committee and the Members’ Consultative Committee and member of the Remunerations Committee.

I am a barrister practising throughout Australia as an SC and KC.

The ATC is a club for members and I am 100% for the members. I would be honoured to be re-elected by the members to the ATC Board of Directors.

My understanding of the members’ concerns has been gained over the past four years walking
the racecourses on race days and listening to you. My term as a Director and Vice-Chair of the
ATC and my years on the NSW Racing Appeals Panel, combined with my professional expertise in commercial and company law and property development, have provided me with a knowledge of the needs of the Club and the racing industry as a whole.

I undertake to pursue my aims stated in 2020, “to secure the future of the ATC as a sporting
club that delivers an unrivalled racing experience for its members, that is financially sound
and skilled in property management”.

If re-elected I will continue to do the work I undertook when you elected me 4 years ago:

  • make myself available to members at the racetrack and via my contact details, and to convey

  • your ideas or concerns to the Board

  • ensure that ATC members are accorded the highest level of services and benefits

  • support Royal Randwick, Rosehill Gardens, Canterbury & Warwick Farm racetracks

  • ensure proper governance; uphold the integrity and transparency of the Board

  • provide expert advice on all legal matters and particularly on property development, such as the Randwick hotel development and, importantly the ROSEHILL GARDENS PROPOSAL and the MEMBERS’ VOTE

  • I will continue to explain, as I’ve done to so many members on most race days, that any decision on the sale of Rosehill is up to you. Your vote is final!

I am endorsed and supported by:

  •  John Coates AC, former Vice-President International Olympic Committee,

  • Gai Waterhouse, A0 Premier Trainer, First Lady of Racing, Only living “Legend” of Australia’s Racing Hall of Fame

  • Chris Waller, premier trainer, Rosehill Gardens

  • Bjorn Baker, premier trainer, Warwick Farm

  • Bob Charley, AO, former Chair AJC, inaugural Chairman NSW Thoroughbred Board and Australian Racing Board, former Royal Randwick Trustee

  • Laurie Macri, former Chair ATC

  • Wilf Mula, former Director STC and AJC

  • The Hon. Wayne Haylen KC, retired Judge, Chairman National Jockeys Trust

In 2020 I said “I am passionate about this Club and its members”. I believe a lot of members
would say that I have shown my dedication, so again I ask for your vote to allow me to continue
to work for the members and your premier race club.

Testimonials

John Coates AC former Vice-President International Olympic Committee, former President Australian Olympic Committee, President Court of Arbitration for Sport

"It gave me great pleasure to nominate Tim Hale SC for re-election as a Director of the ATC. I have known Tim professionally as an eminent Senior Counsel practising across many areas of law. I have known him as a rugby player at our Sydney University and as a NSW rugby referee.

We share a passion for all sport and the well-being of those who practice it, whether Olympians or jockeys. We share a passion for Racing.

Tim and I spent many hours earlier this year discussing the Basic Principles of Good Governance and agreed they apply equally to Clubs like the ATC and organisations within the Olympic Movement. We found common ground on the following Principles:

  1. Clearly defined VISION, MISSION AND STRATEGY with strategy aligned with the Vision

  2. INSTITUTIONAL GOVERNANCE including a clearly defined organisational structure

  3. ETHICAL AND INTEGRITY STANDARDS including conflict of interest policy, the fight against doping and manipulation of competitions.

  4. FINANCIAL GOVERNANCE

  5. SUSTAINABILITY

  6. AUTONOMY and harmonious relationships with Government authorities

  7. Clear SEGREGATION OF DUTIES between the Board, Management, Audit Committee and voting members who elect the directors and who should receive material information.

Tim and I are the first to acknowledge that our respective ATC and organisations within the Olympic movement are not fully compliant with all of these Principles, but they are instructive as to where we should be heading.

Forgive me if you find this somewhat academic as that is not my intention. To the contrary, I ask you to take it as going to the unique qualities of the person I have nominated.

I regard Tim Hale SC as a person of the highest integrity and character.

I sincerely hope you will join me in supporting him for re-election."

Member since 1980

"It was with great pleasure that I seconded the nomination of our Vice Chair, Tim Hale SC for
re-election as a Director of the ATC. I strongly encourage all members to vote for him. I’ve known Tim for more than 35 years. During that time, he has given me sound and sensible legal advice, as he also gave my father T.J. Dad had the highest regard for him, as do I.

In supporting Tim for election in 2020 I said:

“With his energy and easy manner, I am certain he will meet his commitment to represent the
interests of the members. He will make an outstanding Director of the ATC.”

Tim has done exactly that.

As members know, Tim can be seen at Randwick and Rosehill most Saturday race days moving
amongst members, talking and listening to them. He takes members’ ideas and concerns back to Management and the Board. This is why Tim is the most visible and best-known Director on the Board.

In my sworn evidence before the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Proposal to Develop
Rosehill Racecourse in July, I said:

“I exclude from criticism board members Tim Hale and Caroline Searcy, who have behaved more than fairly, having members’ interests at heart.”

These are difficult times for the ATC. Tim’s continued experience, professionalism, integrity and independence on the Board is critical for the challenges that face the ATC and its members. His advocacy for a new funding model for the ATC is vital for our future.

I urge all members to vote at the election of Directors and I urge you to vote for another term
for our Vice Chair Tim Hale SC.
